Former Bilal Students Outline Fresh Plans for Community Progress

At its third annual general meeting on January 4, 2025, the Bilal Islamic Institute Former Students’ Association (BIIFSA) unveiled new initiatives aimed at fostering community development and strengthening alumni engagement. The meeting emphasized unity, interreligious dialogue, and proactive participation in national leadership.

Emphasizing Unity and Interfaith Dialogue

Sheikh Badrudiin Magala, BIIFSA’s vice chairman, highlighted the importance of interreligious cooperation in today’s world. He stated, “Inter-religious dialogue is very key because, in today’s world, fighting over differences is no longer useful. It is important for us to work together and understand each other to move forward collectively.”

Strengthening Financial Sustainability

During the meeting, members discussed strategies to enhance the association’s financial sustainability. They explored various ways to generate resources to support operations and community projects.

Encouraging Alumni Participation

Magala called on alumni of Bilal Islamic Institute to join the association, emphasizing its positive impact since its inception. He noted, “We have helped a number of people, especially the sick. When we are together, we can achieve much more and support one another.”

Promoting Civic Engagement

Magala also urged Muslims to actively engage in the country’s leadership processes. He said, “I call upon my fellow Muslims to participate in elections, whether by voting or contesting for leadership positions. Islam encourages participation in leadership, and it’s essential for us to serve our country and our faith.”

Leadership Term Extension

One of the key resolutions passed at the meeting was the extension of the current leadership’s tenure by one year. Sheikh Swaleh Kiryowa, the association’s treasurer, explained that this decision was necessitated by procedural gaps in the nomination process for key positions, including chairperson, secretary, and treasurer. He stated, “The BIIFSA constitution requires candidates to undergo vetting and submit their names at least two weeks before the annual general meeting. Unfortunately, no nominations were received within the stipulated time.”

Community Development Initiatives

BIIFSA, officially registered in 2022, now boasts 229 members. Since its establishment, the association has supported various initiatives, including assisting sick members and widows. Notable achievements include the acquisition of a piece of land in Kibuli donated by honorary member Faridah Mbabazi, with plans underway to construct a BIIFSA house on the land. Additionally, the association is processing the title for another piece of land donated by a different benefactor. Operating on an annual budget of about Shs 58 million, BIIFSA raises funds through member subscriptions, weekly sadaqah contributions, and donations. Upcoming projects include establishing a cooperative to address members’ economic needs.

BIIFSA’s commitment to unity, community service, and proactive engagement reflects its dedication to fostering positive change and development within the community.
